The Greek Olive Jar, also known as a "pithos" is inspired by beautiful and functional pottery that has been made for centuries on the island of Crete. Storage pots like this were traditionally made in very large sizes for transporting olive oil, wine, or grain. The three handles around the top were used for securing a lid to the top, and also in the case of extremely large jars, to secure a harness to for lifting with a crane.
In more modern times, "pithos" pots have been a favorite of garden designers for creating a beautiful focal point for plantings.
