The Soleil Ovoid is inspired by early American ovoid crocks, but is adorned with vintage artwork of the sun impressed into a "sprig" medallion on one side. Traditionally, sprigs are made using plaster molds. After an original has been fashioned, plaster is poured around it so that once dry, it can be reproduced for use on many pieces. Thin pieces of clay are pressed into the plaster, and then very carefully transferred to the pot when it is in the "leather hard" stage.
Adding sprigged decoration to pottery goes all the way back to ancient Roman pottery, and is also found on Chinese pottery dating back to the 6th century AD. German salt glazed pieces also had sprigged decorations as early as the 15th century. Sprigged decorations became one of the hallmarks of Josiah Wedgewood in the 18th century,
I haven’t made pots with sprigs in many years, but I’ve always liked the extra bit of texture and detail that they add. I’ll be making these ovoid flower pots with both an unadorned, simple rim, as well as a more ornate piecrust rim.
